What Is EMV?
EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard, and Visa — the global standard for chip card technology. Unlike magnetic stripe cards, EMV cards generate a unique transaction code for every purchase, making them virtually impossible to clone.
The Liability Shift
Since October 2015, merchants who do not accept chip cards bear full liability for fraudulent transactions that could have been prevented by EMV technology. This means if a customer pays with a chip card and you only swipe it, you're on the hook for any fraud.
Contactless & NFC
Modern EMV terminals also support NFC (near-field communication) payments — including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. These tap-to-pay options offer even faster checkout than chip insertion.
